This report is the text of a paper presented at Undersea Defence Technology, Cannes, 1995 (UDT 95). It outlines the development of the Towed Vertically Directive Source (TVDS) and the associated ship-handling and winching scheme adopted. This was an extensive programme of cooperative development between SACLANTCEN and the Naval Undersea WarEve Center, New London Detachment sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. It was completed on time and the full suite of equipment was put to sea on NRV Alliance in July 1994 for the first engineering trial.
